Aqua Expeditions was launched in 2007 by founder and CEO, Francesco Galli Zugaro, to fulfill his dream of bringing unparalleled travel experiences, in the utmost comfort, to modern-day adventurers cruising the world’s greatest rivers. Beginning with the Peruvian section of the Amazon River, one of the world’s last great unexplored regions, Galli Zugaro commissioned the custom design of the Aqua Amazon, the first cruise ship to set sail on this stretch of the Amazon.
Spacious and indulgent, yet intimate enough to feel
entirely exclusive, the Aqua Mekong incorporates
elegantly relaxed lounging and dining areas, and can
accommodate a maximum of 40 guests plus crew.
Modern navigation technologies and the highest cruise
ship standards as well as our experienced river pilot
and crew ensure smooth travel and safety on the water.
ONE-TO-ONE STAFF-TO-GUEST RATIO
En suite bathrooms with rain shower and organic bath amenities incorporate the latest eco-sensitive technology. Soft lighting, natural fibers and neutral hues create a relaxing and luxuriously comfortable enclave where one’s only challenge may be to decide whether to gaze upon the Amazon from atop the California king size bed (which can be separated into two twin beds) made with 100% Peruvian cotton high thread count sheets or while lounging on the cozy window-side day bed, binoculars in hand.
The Culinary Journey
World-class dining program with Consulting Chef David Thompson
Under the guidance of the world renowned Thompson,
the Aqua Mekong’s dishes incorporate the timeless
flavors and sustainable ingredients of the Mekong’s
fertile fields. Thompson built his international reputation
on Southeast Asian recipes culled from historic sources,
a delectable tradition he continues on board the Aqua
Mekong. He brings together the finest recipes of Khmer
and Vietnamese river cultures, incorporating the day’s
catch and the market’s freshest produce, be it smoked
fish, tapioca and vegetable dumplings, Vietnamese catfish
minced with shallots, chilies and Thai basil, or grilled
river prawns with peanut relish. Linger over lemongrass
tea or something considerably more decadent, like a
luscious Vietnamese artisanal chocolate fondant.
Awarded the first ever Michelin star for a restaurant serving
Southeast Asian food, Australian chef David Thompson
moved to Bangkok where his Nahm restaurant ranks at
the top of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. As Consulting
Chef of the Aqua Mekong, Thompson incorporates the
diverse culinary traditions of Mekong River cultures
On the waters of the Peruvian Amazon, we launched new spa menus in 2015 featuring an expanded array of massage and spa services. The Aria Amazon offers an exclusive top-deck massage room with internationally-trained therapists offering a range of massages using 100% pure, natural essential oils. Each specially-crafted spa oil is developed from indigenous ingredients such as coconut and vanilla and harvested from either the highlands of Peru or Amazonia before being carefully distilled and conserved, using no additives.
Summary of facilities
Responsible River Cruises – Wildlife Preservation – Community
Fuel Efficiency Our ships’ engines are the most fuel efficient, quiet, and virtually smoke free. We operate a specialized wet exhaust system to minimize the emission of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and reduce our carbon footprint. To minimize noise and vibration on board, our marine generators have been encapsulated. All these measures comply with the latest IMO and U.S. EPA standards.
Aqua Expeditions’ vessels are equipped with aluminum speedboats, which are used for excursions to transport guests around Flooded Forests in Peru and Floating Villages in Asia. In order to minimize erosion to the shores, sound and pollution, the skiffs do not exceed a speed of 10 knots. In addition, it is Aqua Expeditions’ policy that all outboard engines be IMO Compliant with Four Stroke Technology.
By always using biodegradable cleaning products onboard all its vessels, Aqua Expeditions is helping to prevent further contamination of the rivers on which it sails. On the Amazon, Aqua Expeditions uses Ecolab products—the world’s leader in biodegradable cleaning products for the hospitality industry. Everything from hand soap to floor cleaner is supplied by Ecolab. On the Aqua Mekong, the vessel is supplied with the environmentally friendly Enjo products.
All waste is treated onboard in fully contained storage tanks that comply fully with IMO and U.S. Coast Guard standards. The result is 100% clean, sterile water that can safely be discharged into the rivers. Remaining waste materials unsuitable for this process is collected during the journey for delivery at disembarkation for recycling or responsible disposal.
In such magnificent natural environments as Amazonia and the Mekong Delta, the team at Aqua Expeditions can see very clearly that responsible, eco-friendly operations play a crucial role in protecting the health of the people, wildlife and natural environments where our river cruises take you. We are genuinely committed to keeping the great rivers of the world clean and beautiful, for today and for generations to come.
